AMD Announces Commercial Ryzen PRO 7040 Series Mobile Processors with Integrated Ryzen AI Engine, Ryzen PRO 7000 Series Desktop Processors

The new mobile processors bring advanced “Zen 4” performance and a dedicated Ryzen AI engine to select Windows 11 business laptops, while the desktop processors aim to deliver leadership performance and efficiency to business users.

AMD has formally unveiled its commercial-focused Ryzen PRO 7040 Series mobile processors and Ryzen PRO 7000 series desktop processors. Each line shares similar traits to its consumer-oriented counterparts announced a few months ago, with the PRO variants set apart with additional security and remote management features desired in commercial deployments.

Ryzen PRO 7040 Series Mobile Processors with Ryzen AI

AMD’s business mobile processors consist of six or eight Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 integrated graphics built on TSMC’s 4 nm process, offering better performance and efficiency compared to its Zen3+ models. OEMs will have six different SKUs to pick from, three being 7040HS models and three low-power 7040U models. According to AMD, the Ryzen PRO 7840U averages 17% better performance increase over Intel’s Core i7-1365U in a comparable build, as well as 18% higher CPU performance and up to 15% better battery life while video conferencing compared to Apple’s M2 Pro.

All but one, the Ryzen 5 PRO 7540U, includes AMD’s new Ryzen AI engine for dedicated hardware processing of inference workloads, providing software developers the ability to offer “next-gen collaboration, creation, productivity, and AI powered security features” going forward. Intel unveiled its AI hardware acceleration in its upcoming Meteor Lake mobile processors a few weeks ago, but its solution was integrated across the line with no SKU left behind.

Model Cores/Threads Boost Frequency Base Frequency Total Cache (MB) TDP (Watts) GPU Model Ryzen AI Engine
AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS 8/16 Up to 5.2 GHz 4.0 GHz 24MB 35-54W AMD Radeon 780M Included
AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS 8/16 Up to 5.1 GHz 3.8 GHz 24MB 35-54W AMD Radeon 780M Included
AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7640HS 6/12 Up to 5.0 GHz 4.3 GHz 22MB 35-54W AMD Radeon 760M Included
AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U 8/16 Up to 5.1 GHz 3.3 GHz 24MB 15-28W AMD Radeon 760M Included
AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7640U 6/12 Up to 4.9 GHz 3.5 GHz 22MB 15-28W AMD Radeon 760M Included

AI is a big buzzword in the industry thanks to large language models like ChatGPT, but some are wondering what the immediate benefits are by having dedicated hardware for AI processing. AMD illustrates that one noticeable benefit is its integration with Windows Studio Effects and Windows 11, which adds some AI-powered enhancements to video collaboration in programs like Teams. For example, auto-framing, enhanced background blur, and eye-gaze correction only function with a dedicated AI engine on chip.

AMD Ryzen PRO 7000 Series Processors for Desktop

Alongside the new PRO mobile processors, AMD announced three Zen 4 based additions to its commercial desktop offering, the Ryzen PRO 7000. There’s a 6 core Ryzen 5 PRO, 8 core Ryzen 7 PRO, and 12 core Ryzen 9 PRO, all running at a 65W TDP with 2x RDNA 2 graphics cores.

Model Cores/Threads Boost Frequency Base Frequency Total Cache (MB) TDP (Watts) GPU Model
AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 7945 12/24 Up to 5.4 GHz 3.7 GHz 76MB 65W Radeon Graphics
AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7745 8/16 Up to 5.3 GHz 3.8 GHz 40MB 65W Radeon Graphics
AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 7645 6/12 Up to 5.1 GHz 3.8 GHz 38MB 65W Radeon Graphics

The new line is built on the AMD Socket AM5 platform, offering support for the latest technologies like DDR5 memory, PCIe® 5.0 storage, and WiFi® 6E. Unlike its consumer offerings, each processor in the Ryzen PRO 7000 Series includes numerous commercial features for security and manageability like AMD Memory Guard, Secured-core PC, Shadow Stack, and Microsoft Pluton security processor.

Pricing and availability for either processor line wasn’t specifically disclosed, though AMD notes that enterprise customers should be able to purchase Ryzen PRO based systems from top OEMs like HP and Lenovo sometime this month.
