Eaton Launches New Universal Input Rack PDU

The Eaton G4 Universal Input PDU (UPDU) is built for global standardization and features a new network card with comprehensive power management and market-leading cybersecurity.

Every business wants to save time, reduce costs, and simplify power management. The new G4 PDU product line from Eaton will help your customers do all three. This universal input PDU allows organizations to standardize on one power distribution platform no matter where in the world they have operations—simply by changing the power cord. Eaton G4 PDUs offer simplicity in design without compromising on any technological capabilities.

The versatility of the Eaton universal input rack PDU will also enable you to shorten lead times for any customer opportunity that arises. Managed service providers (MSPs) who are Eaton PowerAdvantage partners “will be able to make quicker decisions and deploy faster because you’re ordering one part number,” says Richard Varela, Eaton’s rack PDU global product manager. Whether you’re servicing a remote office or any type of edge environment or businesses with cramped quarters, you can provide one solution for any type of power configuration. “Once you have a better understanding of what the power needs are in those environments, then you simply select the appropriate accompanying cable.”

The G4 UPDU offers options from 4 to 23 kVA, single-phase or three-phase. The PDU provides best in class 42 outlets in 42U; 24-outlet designs are available in 42U or shorter-length chassis. “What we are trying to do is give the marketplace what it is currently demanding, and that is high-density, enterprise-quality power distribution,” Varela explains. “We’ve been doing it with our HD product line, which is our configurable product line, and the goal of this project was to deliver that same enterprise-quality PDU off the shelf.”

By accommodating rack equipment with a broad range of power needs, the universal input PDU alleviates the cost and complexity of mixing and

matching different PDUs for different installations and helps ensure your customer won’t outgrow their PDU as their power needs evolve.

Importantly, the G4 UPDU has a very low-profile design. It measures 2” (width) × 2.56” (depth at circuit breakers) × 72” (height) and fits in a 42U enclosure (52 × 65 × 1829 mm). The low-profile circuit breakers prevent interference with servers, storage, or networking equipment, and the circuit breakers and outlets are evenly distributed for easy cable routing.

The universal input PDU also features a brand-new G4 network card and platform, providing comprehensive power management with market-leading cybersecurity. This enables you to shorten response time with automation and remote management, proactively address power problems before they become downtime issues for your customers, and minimize cybersecurity vulnerabilities through hardware root of trust.

Security features of the network card include:

  • Zero Trust architecture – Enables secure boot and complete chain of trust to mitigate cybersecurity risk.
  • User configurable firewall – Reduces an organization’s attack surface and helps meet cybersecurity compliance requirements.
  • Rest API – Easily integrates with native systems and automates M2M interactions.
  • Chain-of-trust encryption and secure firmware boot capability – Prevent the G4 PDU from being a cyberattack vulnerability point.

In addition, the network card can only be upgraded by genuine encrypted Eaton firmware, and the USB-C port enables direct computer connection to the UPDU control module for a more secure method than connecting via Ethernet.

The need for reliable, scalable, and versatile power distribution continues to grow as your customers become more dependent on digital resources. “This is a product that was designed for global standardization,” says Varela. “It offers your customers versatility while increasing their cybersecurity posture.”
