The NBA season may be about over (Los Angeles leads Miami 3-1 with a game tonight), but hurricane season refuses to leave the building. News from big names. Veeam acquired Kasten, a big name in the Kubernetes backup and disaster recovery market. Cash and stock total added up to about $150 million. The Kasten K10 platform will be folded into Veeam Backup & Replication but will also be available independently.
HP fills out its Spectre portfolio with the HP Spectre x360 14 (pictured). Using a 3:2 display aspect ratio rather than 16:9 provides 20% more vertical viewing space for web and document info, HP says. They also have other Spectre and ENVY premium portables including 11th Gen Intel Core processors and Iris graphics.
U.S. federal and public sector customers prefer U.S. sourced products, especially secure ones. Hewlett Packard Enterprise knows it, hence the HPE Trusted Supply Chain initiative, featuring the new HPE ProLiant DL380T server, which is made in domestic factories with hardened data protection during the manufacturing process. More servers and systems will follow in 2021.
Need more data in less space? Of course. Check out the new Dell EMC PowerEdge XE7100, a standard-depth 5U unit Dell claims is the highest-density of its kind available. Some new Webex features like a more intelligent waiting room, controls grouped more logically without overlaying content or videos, and background noise filtering will improve the presentation of your meetings. News from less big names that had big weeks. Ping’s PingOne Services, a suite of stand-alone cloud services for identity and access management, walked the red carpet. PingOne MFA (pictured) is a multifactor authentication tool and PingOne Risk Management are the first two available.
Okta and Salesforce.com are working together more tightly. The Okta Identity Cloud will integrate with Salesforce Work.com to improve trust and resiliency. But wait, there’s more! At the Okta Showcase, Okta Advanced Server Access got some new goodies to help DevOps teams, to keep Zero Trust principles up front, and a few more. For developers, the extended Okta Devices Platform Service through the Okta Devices SDK assists with passwordless authentication and more.
Launching first on AWS, Frictionless Assessment from Tenable updates vulnerability management for modern assets and leverages native technologies to continuously assess vulnerabilities. Also in the spotlight? New Tenable Lumin innovations to help customers link business objectives with cybersecurity initiatives.

MobileIron surveyed over 1,200 workers in seven countries for its Everywhere Enterprise report. Turns our 80% of global employees don’t want to return to the office full time, even though 30% feel that being isolated from their team was the biggest hinderance to productivity during the lockdown. Four distinct employee types surfaced: Hybrid Harry, Mobile Molly, Desktop Dora, and Frontline Fred. Henry misses coworkers, while Molly relies on remote collaboration tools and is more like to click on a malicious link because of reliance on mobile devices. Dora can’t wait to get back to work, while Fred is stuck at work no matter what and relies on purpose-built devices and applications. All this aside, 33% consider IT security to be a low priority, and 43% weren’t sure what a phishing attack was. Sigh.
Navisite’s research report The Overnight Shift to a Remote Workforce: Impact on Business Operations compares pre-and post-COVID-19 employee locations. Before, only 14% of the 100 C-level exec respondents had more than half of their employees working from home. After, it jumped to 64%. 36% admit they weren’t prepared to shift so many employees to home, and 51% suffered some IT pains. 29% are still fighting some of those battles today. 83% say post-lockdown WFH policies will be more liberal.
The Work Survey from ServiceNow talked to executives and employees in 11 countries about COVID-19’s impact on work. 92% of execs said their company had to rethink how they work, and 87% of employees say it’s better now. 91% and 87% of execs and employees said the transition to new ways of working went faster than expected. Operating expenses have dropped for 88% of businesses. The new normal may be tough for the 91% of companies that still have offline workflows. Coming back to the office may be hard when 46% of employees and 32% of execs don’t believe their companies will take appropriate safety steps for their return.
The Arctic Wolf 2020 Security Operations Report should make you uncomfortable. Incident analysis found that the number of corporate credentials with plaintext passwords on the dark web has increased by 429% since March. Yes, of this year. COVID-19 has made things worse: phishing and ransomware attempts are up 64%, critical vulnerability patch time has increased by 40 days, and unsecured Wi-Fi usage is up over 240%. Sleep tight!
