The mid-year update to the 2021 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report shows the number of ransomware attacks through June is greater than the global total for all of 2020. Year-to-date spikes of 185% in the U.S. and 144% in the U.K. come partly from increased focus on the government, education, healthcare, and retail verticals by attackers. IoT malware is up 59% YTD. Never-before-seen malware showed up more than ever, a 54% YTD increase over the first half of 2020. The 51.1 million cryptojacking attempts are a 23% increase over the first six months of 2020, driven by a huge 248% increase in Europe. This shows cybercriminals are willing to shift markets to maintain online anonymity if they can make money. IoT attacks were up only 15% in the U.S., but up 113% in Europe and 190% in Asia. Shared threat analysis came from more than 50 industry collaboration groups and research organizations collected data from 1.1 million sensors in 215 countries and territories.
Barracuda’s Spear Phishing: Top Threats and Trends Vol. 6 – Insights into attackers’ evolving tactics and who they’re targeting report found an average organization is targeted by over 700 social engineering attacks each year. 77% target employees outside of financial and executive roles, and 43% of phishing attacks impersonate Microsoft. An average CEO receives 57 targeted phishing attacks in a year. 20% of attacks target employees in sales roles. Attackers focus on lower-level employees then work their way up to higher value targets.
Analyst ESG and the Information Systems Security Association released The Life and Times of Cybersecurity Professional 2021, the fifth annual global study of cybersecurity professionals. Sadly, the cybersecurity skills crisis continues and has impacted 57% of organizations, resulting in an increased workload for the cybersecurity team (62%), unfilled job openings (38%), and high burnout among staff (38%). Amazingly, 95% of respondents say the skills shortage and its impact have not improved over the past few years, and 44% say it’s gotten worse. Why are companies short of staff? For 38%, it’s because they don’t offer competitive compensation. No surprise then that the main reason CISOs leave a company is for another employer paying more (33%). 76% says it’s difficult to recruit and hire cybersecurity staff, while 18% claim it’s extremely difficult. What could companies do? 59% report they can’t keep up with cybersecurity skills development because job requirements get in the way.
Happy cats and booze hounds. Cat owners seem to care if their cats are unhappy, even if their cats don’t return the favor.
