AWS news. September 2nd was “”Storage Day”” at AWS, whose users can now move NetApp ONTAP file systems to the AWS cloud without changing code or data management. Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP has hit general availability.
Of course, files online need backup love, too, so the availability of AWS Backup Audit Manager, a new feature in AWS Backup, may help. Fully managed with policy-driven backups and more.
When released, Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering was intended for objects larger than 128 KB and stored for a minimum of 30 days. Two new updates change these restrictions, with no minimum storage duration for all objects, and no monitoring or automation charges for objects smaller than 1218 KB.
Microsoft news. Now we know: Windows 11, a free upgrade to Win10, will start rolling out on October 5, making an Update Tuesday for the ages. Pre-loaded Win11 systems will be on the shelf as well.
Here’s a not-surprising follow-up item: ASUS has a new lineup of Windows 11-powered laptops: ProArt Studiobook 16/Pro 16 OLED, the Vivobook Pro 14X (pictured), Vivobook Pro 16X, and Zenbook 14X OLED.

Barracuda’s new report, Bot attacks: Top Threats and Trends—Insights into the growing number of automated attacks, found bot traffic has taken off like the proverbial rocket, as in nearly straight up. Bot traffic makes up nearly two-thirds of internet traffic now, and e-commerce applications and login portals are the most common targets of advanced persistent bots. Bad bots are nearly 40% of all traffic, and North America is the source of 67% of that traffic, mostly from public data centers. Most bad bot traffic comes equally from AWS and Microsoft Azure. Just over 22% comes from Europe, where the bots mostly start from hosting services or residential IP addresses. At least the bot-jerks work ethic is good, because the bad bots happen primarily during a standard workday.
Cowabunga. Someone check their Chinese calendar and see if this is the Year of the Cow, because they’re everywhere all of a sudden.
Don’t believe me? Imagine sitting in the drive thru line at McDonalds, looking at another car, and seeing a calf face in the window. In fact, the back seat in question includes three cows, but this is Wisconsin, so, weird things, sure, but three? Wonder if they ordered chicken?
Or you could look up and see a flying cow, or at least one lifted up by a helicopter. Not Wisconsin this time, but Switzerland. The Alps makes vet calls dicey, so they airlifted the sick cow to get help.
Or a cow in a tree, left stranded by Hurricane Ida. This cow needed friends with a chainsaw to get unstuck in St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana.
So much travel wears cows out, so they need a trip to the beach. The trick is getting them to leave, since a bunch of cows took up residence on a beach in Corsica during the lockdown, when people were away. Now the people are back, but the cows don’t care, and are trying to run the humans away. Bad cows!
