This week’s stats ticker:

The IDC report GenAI Implementation Market Outlook: Worldwide Core IT Spending for GenAI Forecast, 2023-2027, forecasts that businesses will spend nearly $16 billion worldwide on GenAI products in 2023. Over the next several years, organizations will move from early pilots to building out targeted use cases and then adopt GenAI across business activities. GenAI infrastructure, including hardware, will be the largest piece of the investment during the build-out phase, but GenAI services will overtake infrastructure by 2027 with a five-year CAGR of 76.8%. tl;dr: AI begets more AI.

Ransomware still a daily worry? You’re not alone. Hornetsecurity’s Ransomware Survey found almost 60% of businesses are very to extremely concerned about ransomware attacks. And with good reason, since 20% of respondents, one in five, said their company suffered an attack in 2023 already. More than nine out of ten are aware of the potential for negative impact, but only 54% of respondents said their leaders are actively involved in conversations and decision making about preventing such attacks. Four in ten said they shift the burden to IT and let them deal with it. Almost 90% used endpoint protection with anti-ransomware capabilities, and 22.4% mentioned “AI-enabled security solutions” as a tool.

Accounting and more software maker Sage released information from its “Cybersecurity for SMBs: Navigating Complexity and Building Resilience” report. First pain point? 48% of SMBs have experienced a cybersecurity incident in the past year, so 91% expect cybersecurity investments to increase or remain the same in the coming year. 44% admit economic uncertainty and higher costs of living reduced their cybersecurity budgets. 19% rely solely on basic controls, and only 58% backup their data. While only 64% of SMBs have cyberinsurance now, 74% plan to use it next year.

Magic the MajorMagic, the major. All you philosophy, French literature, and modern dance majors rejoice: there’s now proof that your degree is not the most useless. Thank Britain’s University of Exeter, which next year will offer a master’s degree in magic and occult science.

Is this the public university version of Hogwarts? Sorry, it’s a real university, but the degree is in the analysis of the occult in literature, philosophy, archaeology, sociology, psychology, drama, and religion. Of course, several of those areas overlap the useless degrees your parents complain about, so learning about magic seems far less interesting than learning actual magic.

Unless you can make a living by appearing on podcasts as an expert on the mystical arts, your parents may have the last laugh. C’mon, Exeter, can’t you give us one teeny magic spell?
