It’s not exactly the way you might expect a tier-one company to advertise its product to the channel. After all, hardware and compatibility features don’t exactly conjure up images of moist cake and vanilla icing. Nevertheless, the latest pitch from Lenovo makes it a cupcake paradise for SMBs that use the ThinkPad Edge.
This week marked the general availability announcement of Lenovo’s ThinkPad Edge 14- and 15-inch versions. The laptops start at just $599, making the new Intel Core i3 or i5 processor laptops ideal for SMBs.
Fittingly, Lenovo released a corporate video profiling a company that has found success using the new products. The thing is, it’s a cupcake bakery–not exactly what you might expect to see in a viral video for the channel.
But it’s working. In just two days, according to Lenovo, the ad campaign has secured 1,000 tweets and 50 Facebook posts (make that 51).
For CupCakeStop.com the publicity is undoubtedly a good thing. In addition to getting quite a bit of traffic on YouTube, it was also called “The first mobile cupcake store in NYC using the ThinkPad Edge to run the business” by one of the largest laptop brands on the planet. For a cupcake startup, that’s pretty significant press.
For Lenovo, the publicity is … all icing.
