The new storage array is designed to help simplify such administrative tasks as set up and management. The new system can also reduce storage rack space by up to 67 percent, according to IBM.

IBM rolled out new storage systems this week optimized for such workloads as transaction processing and real-time analytics. Among the new products is a midrange disk system called the IBM Storwize V7000.

IBM's Storwize V7000 Hits the ChannelThe IBM Storwize 7000 array promises to enable SMBs to “efficiently and cost-effectively manage the torrent of data” flowing into their businesses, according to IBM. The company says management of the data flow will, in turn, enable delivery of such workloads as transaction processing completed online and via mobile and embedded devices.

According to a press release from IBM, the rollout reflects the company’s $6 billion annual investment in R&D.

The IBM Storwize V7000 system is designed to help simplify such administrative tasks as set up and management. The new system can reduce storage rack space by up to 67 percent, according the company. It also includes an integrated set of software for storage efficiency.

Storwize V7000 includes a graphical user interface modeled after the popular XIV user interface, designed to significantly reduce system set up and administration; Easy Tier software; and storage virtualization software.

“Organizations are struggling with the volume and evolving nature of the data they’re already collecting,” says IBM’s general manager of storage. “The IBM Storwize V7000 will deliver clients a new level of storage efficiency that can help them better store and secure their data.” He adds, “IBM is combining home-grown storage innovations, like our Easy Tier technology, together with acquisitions of storage technologies such as XIV to deliver our clients a truly unmatched portfolio of storage solutions.”

IBM also introduced a range of other storage products this week, including:

  • IBM System Storage DS8800–Based on internal studies, IBM says this solution can offer up to 40 percent faster performance than its predecessor, the IBM System Storage DS8700. The DS8800 will support IBM Easy Tier by next year.
  • Updated SAN Volume Controller–This software includes Easy Tier, an administrator GUI, and increased scalability.
  • IBM Systems Director Storage Control–This software manages storage, servers, and network technology through a single interface.
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center v4.2–This software has been enhanced for midrange systems.
