Power quality vendor Schneider Electric has unveiled a single-phase UPS engineered for use in distributed edge computing environments.
According to its manufacturer, the new product, named the APC Smart-UPS Ultra, is the first 3kW 1U product in the industry. It’s also the smallest single-phase UPS Schneider makes, offering 2.4 times more power density than comparable products, Schneider says, in a form factor half as big and half as heavy. Space is often at a premium in edge computing locations.
The APC Smart-UPS Ultra uses a lithium-ion battery that according to Schneider lasts up to three times longer than traditional lead acid cells and will not need to be replaced under normal operating conditions. That reduces the need for costly support visits at edge sites, the vendor adds, resulting in 15% TCO savings over 10 years.
“To meet the digital demands of the future, local, regional and cloud data centers must be designed to be sustainable, resilient, efficient and adaptable. Schneider Electric continues to innovate and respond to customer needs with the introduction of the APC Smart-UPS Ultra,” said Tarunjeet Sarao, Schneider Electric’s senior vice president of transactional and edge line of business, in a media statement. “The first of its kind, APC Smart-UPS Ultra is redefining the single-phase UPS, making it lighter and more powerful with the next generation semiconductor technology. In addition, it uses lithium-ion technology to power distributed IT and edge computing sites to ensure our digital life is on.”
The APC Smart-UPS Ultra comes with a five-year warranty. The system offers both rack and tower mounting options, and can be installed on walls and ceilings at companies that want to free up rack space. It’s also compatible with Schneider’s EcoStruxure platform, which supports cloud-based monitoring and provides data-driven performance optimization advice.
Global spending on edge computing technology will grow at a 12.5% CAGR through 2024 to $250.6 billion, according to IDC.
In April, Schneider revised its Advanced Solutions Partner program in a bid to facilitate collaboration with traditional IT partners on data center and edge computing opportunities. In March, the company introduced a new partner program designed to help channel pros create and expand managed power practices.
