PerfTech has expanded its Island Router lineup with the release of the Island Pro, a new version with a form factor designed to better cater to business customers while delivering even faster speeds and enhanced performance. Building on the foundation of the original Island Router, which we reviewed earlier this year, the Island Pro boasts some significant improvements, particularly in speed, security, and scalability.
“For too long the router function has been buried in cheap, lackluster, open-sourced code products, says Tom Gallo, Chief Revenue Officer. “They’ve performed adequately, but the avalanche of IoT devices, ever-increasing security threats, the demands of Wi-Fi 6/7, and the AI freight train that’s coming changes everything. Simply put, home and SMB networks now need an enterprise-grade router.”
What’s New in Island Pro?
The Island Pro promises to take networking to the next level with up to 10x faster speeds than many competing routers, and somehow delivers significant performance improvements over the OG Island’s already impressive numbers. PerfTech has also expanded the number of ports, going from 4 gigabit Ethernet ports to 6×2.5G ports and 4x10G SFP+ ports, making it ideal for handling high-volume data traffic in larger business networks.
Key Features:
- Up to 10,000 devices supported, with the ability to handle (channeling my inner Mike Myers) 1 million simultaneous connections.
- ~14M packets per second, ~800K connections per second
- ~10 Gbps raw throughput, ~10 Gbps total VPN throughput
- Intel 8-core CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 128GB of NVMe flash memory for smooth, high-speed operation.
Still Island, and that’s a good thing
The Island Pro retains the original’s hospitable amenities businesses would like to enjoy during their stay, like its seamless multi-WAN failover, as well as firewall protection, intrusion prevention, and deep packet inspection (DPI) to safeguard against a range of security threats. Additionally, Island and Island Pro are designed with a modular software architecture that minimizes the need for reboots—even during updates.
Pricing and Availability
The Island Pro is priced at $1,299 and is available now. Like Island, Island Pro is a wired router intended to be paired with a wide range of Wi-Fi access points, mesh systems, and switches. Island also supports management through platforms like OvrC and Domotz, or can be managed directly through the excellently designed Island app.
PerfTech believes its 40 years of networking experience with some of the worlds biggest brands makes Island Pro “uniquely positioned for integrators to bring their customers’ networks to a new level of performance and security,” according Rhonda Grimm, Sr. Director of Channel Success. “That expertise with no subscription fees, an aggressive price point, human, in-house support, and one-on-one onboarding has made Island the go-to router for our integrators.”
Whether you’re managing a large number of devices or simply need a router that can handle high-speed data with ease, the Island Pro may just be the destination you’re looking for. Hopefully they still include some lip balm in the box.
