Egnyte Expands Ransomware Protection and Adds Ransomware Recovery

Subscribers to any of the vendor’s cloud file server offerings can now block ransomware attacks immediately. Enterprise subscribers can also inspect saved snapshots to determine when ransomware infected files and restore data to that point with one click.

In a bid to help end users better shield data from soaring ransomware attacks, Egnyte has expanded access to its Ransomware Protection solution and introduced a new Ransomware Recovery system.

The cloud content security, compliance, and collaboration vendor announced those and other changes during its Egnyte Exchange Global Summit, which took place online today.

Previously available only to users of Egnyte’s top-of-the-line Enterprise plan, Ransomware Protection is now also included in the entry-level Business plan, which is priced at $20 per user per month when paid annually. The system can detect over 2,000 ransomware signatures, with more crowdsourced daily. It also blocks attacks immediately and automatically alerts technicians when endpoints are infected.

“The combination of remote work scenarios, rogue cryptocurrency exchanges, and the growing sophistication of ransomware gangs have unleashed a perfect storm for ransomware threats that is wreaking havoc on small- and mid-sized businesses,” said Rajesh Ram, Egnyte’s co-founder and chief experience officer, in a media statement. “In this new environment, standalone file storage solutions are a dangerous lightning rod. That’s why Egnyte is now making ransomware protection standard with every one of its platform plan offerings starting today.”

Enterprise plan subscribers also now have access to a new system called Ransomware Recovery that lets users inspect saved snapshots, determine when ransomware infected a given file, and restore data to that point with a single click.

“Even if you don’t pay the ransom, the typical attack costs companies 21 days of downtime while you seek to isolate the infected files, determine the type of attack, and ultimately recover your content,” said Egnyte Co-Founder and Chief Security Officer Kris Lahiri in prepared remarks. “Egnyte’s snapshot-based recovery means you can recover in a matter of hours, not weeks, and avoid the significant reputational and financial losses often associated with longer recovery times.”

Security vendor SonicWall recorded 304.7 million ransomware attacks in the first half of 2021, a 151% year-over-year increase. IDC, meanwhile, says that more than one third of organizations worldwide have experienced a ransomware attack or breach that blocked access to systems or data in the previous 12 months.

Midsize businesses are struggling most heavily among ransomware victims, moreover, according to a recent Egnyte research study showing that 66% of organizations with 100 to 1,000 employees were underprepared for an attack, versus 31% of larger companies.

Egnyte introduced a risk mitigation and management system for midsize businesses in April and new integrations with Google Workspace and Dropbox in May.
