This week’s stats ticker:

The 2022 State of IT annual report from Spiceworks Ziff Davis gives a look at our post-pandemic world and potential budget shifts. SWZD surveyed 1,000+ IT buyers across North America and Europe. The majority, 61%, expect business revenues to increase, and a year-over-year look shows budget increases (53%) or status quo (35%). Less rosy are the worries over continued shortages, price increases, shipping delays, and other logistical issues. More dollars will shift to cloud and managed services, with plans to accelerate modernization for better support and security for remote workers. 64% of enterprises will raise IT budgets compared to 45% of SMBs. Emerging tech put on hold like Gigabit W-Fi, IoT, containers, hyperconverged infrastructure, and more will get a boost.

BetterCloud released its 2021 State of SaaSOps after surveying more than 500 IT and security pros about the latest challenges of managing SaaS at scale. They also analyzed data from nearly 2,000 organizations and millions of users about file security violations. This year, organizations use 110 SaaS apps on average compared to 80 last year. 55% say their top challenge is lack of visibility into user activity and data, along with knowing which SaaS apps are in use and managing app configurations. Data loss comes mostly from employees with good intentions but poor awareness who inadvertently expose sensitive information, say 72% of respondents. They expect the 45% of automated SaaS apps to rise to nearly 80% within the next three years.

The quarterly Internet Security Report from WatchGuard Technologies found that 91.5% of malware arrived over an encrypted connection, a dramatic increase from the previous quarter. In other words, examine encrypted HTTPS traffic or miss 9/10 of all malware. PowerShell tools showed up as a malware vector for the first time at the top of the list for overall encrypted threats. More good news? Fileless threats are soaring, already reaching 80% of last year’s total. Even with the shift to a remote workforce, network attacks are booming, up 22% with nearly 4.1 million attacks.

Egnyte released its 2021 Data Governance Trends Report, based on a survey of 400 IT execs in July 2021. Unchecked data growth, along with a lack of visibility, increases the risk of breaches, ransomware, and compliance violations dramatically. Remote work is here to stay for a while, with 88% reporting employees will work remotely at least some of the time throughout 2022. Ransomware is the top security concern for large companies, and 25% says its their biggest worry. Half worry most about being locked out of company data, while the other half are equally nervous about data being publicly exposed. Content sprawl hurts as well, with 100% of respondents saying scattered data from email, collaboration portals, and local devices are among the hardest to secure.

Hamster GeniusHamster genius FTW. You know about cryptocurrency, right? Your portfolio is performing above market, do we agree?

Sorry, but you’re being beaten, at least since June, by a German name Mr. Goxx. His portfolio has a wide range of cryptocurrencies and is up more than 16% since he started trading, according to Protos data.

You’re OK with that, right? Smart guys are always winning, right?

Sorry, folks, but Mr. Goxx is a hamster. Your performance is being shamed by a small, furry, brown rodent. Is it happy hour yet?
