Not trying to cause trouble here, but today (September 10th) is the exact midpoint of hurricane season. We’ve already seen more named storms in the Atlantic so far this month—13—than in all but four other years. Predictions are for more storms than usual the rest of this year, so keep these fresh newstips high and dry, please.
Big names, big news. Google revved up G Suite, er, Google Workspace to better bridge “”hybrid work gaps“” experienced by the mix of remote, on-premises, and mobile workers needing access to Spaces, the collaboration linchpin undergirding all of the suite’s other apps. Here’s a big basket full of new high-performance single-processor systems from Supermicro. The processors in question are the new Intel Xeon E-2300 and 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Form factors include multi-node servers, rackmount servers, and workstations.

The new HP Wolf Security Rebellions & Rejections report found tension between IT teams and work-from-home employees. Cause? IT teams have been forced to compromise security to keep work flowing, even in the midst of rising threats. Worse, when they push to increase the security profile of remote workers, they’re rejected. 76% of IT teams feel security took a back seat to continuity during the pandemic, and 91% felt pressure to compromise security. On the other team, 48% of younger office workers (18-24) viewed security as a hinderance. The same percentage of all office workers agreed that security measures meant a lot of wasted time, but 64% of the 18-24 group felt that way. Over half of the young group worried more about meeting deadlines than protecting against a data breach. 39% weren’t sure what the security policies were, or even if there were any. 83% of IT teams are just waiting for the “”ticking time bomb”” of a corporate network breach. Not surprisingly, 80% said IT security was becoming a “”thankless task”” because nobody listens to them.
Pet fails. Maybe we can’t blame the pets, or even call these pets. One landlord in Auburn, Maine, had to call for animal rescue when he found a tenant moved out and left behind 19 tarantulas (four of them dead) and one python. Are those pets? Worse, all the animals are illegal in Maine. The 15 surviving tarantulas and the python will be relocated.
One the other hand, cats have been great pets forever, right? Sure, but an 80-pound cougar is not your typical house cat. One was found in an apartment in, of all places, New York City. The 11-month-old female was turned over to authorities by its owner. Guess they got tired of cleaning that litter box.
