Arcserve Unveils Hyperconverged Data Protection Appliances

The new Arcserve N Series, which combines Arcserve’s own UDP platform with products from Nutanix and Sophos, is designed to meet a wide range of backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery needs through a single, all-in-one SKU.

Arcserve has introduced a new line of all-in-one data protection appliances based on hyperconverged infrastructure software from Nutanix and security software from Sophos.

The new Arcserve N Series allows users of Nutanix solutions in particular to meet a wide range of backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery needs through a single SKU with a single point of contact for support, according to Ahsan Siddiqui, Arcserve’s director of product management.

“This is a complete turnkey data protection appliance that runs on a very familiar Nutanix platform,” he says.

The new devices, which are Arcserve’s first collaborative offering with Nutanix, incorporate Arcserve’s Unified Data Protection (UDP) software, the Nutanix AHV virtualization solution, and the Nutanix Mine data protection service. Integration with the Nutanix Prism management console lets users monitor BDR systems through the same interface they use to oversee other Nutanix workloads, and then click through directly to UDP’s web-based administration tool to perform more advanced functions like adjusting backup policies and initiating recoveries.

A built-in copy of the Sophos Intercept X Advanced for Server endpoint protection platform contributes real-time, behavior-based ransomware protection. Users can further protect data, Arcserve says, by adding an immutable storage layer utilizing its OneXafe NAS devices and object lock storage hosted in the AWS S3 cloud service, both of which are available separately.

N Series appliances can protect Nutanix AHV and Nutanix Files workloads as well as physical Windows and Linux hosts and virtual machines running on VMware and Hyper-V or in the Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure public clouds. Additional features include SLA reporting, built-in and automated recovery testing, and support for tiering to disk, tape, and cloud storage, along cross-hypervisor recovery.

Like other Arcserve offerings, N Series products are available exclusively via the channel. “This is a hundred percent through two-tier distribution and partners,” Siddiqui says.

The first two N Series models, which are available for ordering now and begin shipping next month, are high-capacity units with substantial price tags. SMB-oriented VARs and solution providers can use them to move beyond their current customer base into the midsize enterprise segment, according to Arcserve CMO Shridar Subramanian.

“We view this as a market expansion opportunity for our partners,” he says. Additional N Series appliances set for future release will be suitable for small and midsize buyers as well as larger businesses, he continues.

Sophos and Arcserve announced an agreement to combine Intercept X Advanced for Server with UDP nearly two years ago. In March, the two vendors shipped a UDP update with expanded ransomware prevention functionality along with new backup features for Nutanix deployments and Oracle databases.

Arcserve merged with BDR vendor StorageCraft earlier this year.
