Acronis Adds Advanced Email Security Solution to Cyber Protect Cloud

Based on software from “prevention-as-a-service” vendor Perception Point, the new system is the latest optional add-on for the vendor’s core security and data protection platform.

Acronis has equipped its Cyber Protect Cloud solution with an advanced protection pack designed to shield end users from phishing, spoofing, spam, business email compromise messages, and other email-borne threats.

Called Advanced Email Security, the new offering is based on software from Perception Point, a self-described “prevention-as-a-service” vendor that specializes in shielding companies from content-based attacks on email, cloud storage, CRM, and messaging platforms.

“For service providers, preventing email threats from reaching their clients is vital,” said Jan-Jaap Jager, a board advisor and chief revenue officer at Acronis, in a media statement. “The new Advanced Email Security pack marries the best-in-class technology from Perception Point with the unified cybersecurity, data protection, and endpoint protection of Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. As a result, MSPs have everything needed to keep clients secure and their business efficient and profitable.”

The new product, which supports Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Open-Xchange mailboxes, and on-premises mail servers, uses threat intelligence, URL reputation checks, and computer vision analysis to evaluate incoming email. It also employs machine-intelligence-enhanced implementations of three industry standard security tools: Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), and Sender Policy Framework (SPF).

The system detects advanced evasion techniques used to hide malicious content by recursively unpacking embedded files and URLs before analyzing them with both dynamic and static detection engines, says Acronis.

The software evaluates messages from internal as well as external senders to make lateral movement through an organization harder as well. CPU-level technology in Perception Point’s solution adds the ability to mitigate advanced persistent threats and zero-days by intervening early in the attack chain before malware executes. Thanks to that and other features, Acronis says, verdicts on incoming messages arrive within a maximum of 30 seconds.

“We are thrilled to partner with Acronis to power the leading Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud solution, with Perception Point, integrated as the Advanced Email Security pack,” said Perception Point CEO Yoram Salinger in prepared remarks. “Together we are making enterprise-grade cybersecurity solutions available to all MSPs and their end-customers. Acronis’ and Perception Point’s approach helps us realize our vision of combining the best technology with personalized services, to protect customers from the broad range of constantly evolving threats.”

Acronis recently rolled out a new licensing model for Cyber Protect Cloud that lets users employ a wide-ranging set of basic security and data protection features free of charge, and then add more sophisticated capabilities by purchasing advanced protection packs.

Previously introduced packs include the Advanced Backup pack, which provides continuous backup updating; the Advanced Disaster Recovery pack, which spins up cloud-based recovery environments in real time; the Advanced Security pack, which supplements the base solution’s defensive technologies; and the Advanced Management pack, which adds features like integrated patch management for over 200 third-party applications.

Cyber Protect Cloud encompasses capabilities previously delivered by Acronis’s Cyber Backup Cloud, Cyber Disaster Recovery Cloud, Cyber Files Cloud, and Cyber Notary Cloud solutions. All four of those systems have been phased out as stand-alone offerings. Acronis revealed its intention to cease development of Cyber Backup last fall.
