If you haven’t yet visited Coghead’s Web site, you might want to, if for no other reason than you’ll know what people are talking about when it comes up in conversation–which it certainly may. It’s one interesting company, with a cool software development platform, or “platform as a service,” that is built on a database provided through partnership with Oracle; the hosting platform is offered via a similar arrangement with Amazon.com.
The idea is to use the all-in-one, Web-based application environment to create your own custom programs (no coding is necessary; application development is of the visual, drag-and-drop-style) that you can sell to your customers and generate a recurring revenue stream. A section on the site explains exactly how you make money.
If you’re not into creating software for clients but would like to have a hand at it to improve your own business, that’s an option as well. Or, you can subscribe to applications that have already been created–such as Web Force CRM, Marketing Budget Management, IT Asset Management, and a host of others–although some basic applications are actually free.
Fees for using the platform vary, starting with a free trial, then $25/month to build and use apps, to $75/month to build and sell your apps. All have allotments for number of users, records, and storage. The company also has a solution provider program; a section of the site explains how you get started, how the program works, and its benefits. Go have a look at www.coghead.com.
