DataCore Increases Virtual Disk Size to 1 PB

Released in tandem with its latest storage virtualization software update, DataCore says the increase aims to “blow the roof off the capacity ceiling.”

DataCore Software, provider of storage virtualization and disaster recovery software, has stretched the size of its virtual disks, going from 2 TB to a single petabyte.

Why the increase? In a statement to SystemBuilderPro.com, DataCore says industry trends have demanded “huge virtual disk” requirements. “Clients are eager to group multiple disk drives,” says DataCore, “into RAID sets.”

DataCore says its capacity increase enables storage virtualization nodes to “control pools consisting of numerous RAID sets, each well over the previous 2 TB maximum.”

Company director of product marketing Augie Gonzalez says DataCore make a strategic design decision to “blow the roof off the capacity ceiling” rather than “inch up to 4 or 16 TBs.”

“We’re still frugal on the back-end,” Gonzalez adds, “using thin-provisioning to minimize how much real capacity has to be in place Day 1. Performance wise, these immense virtual disks benefit from DataCore’s 1 TB per node, 64-bit mega-caches. You can be big, and very fast too.”

The new software release is available immediately. DataCore customers under current maintenance contracts are eligible to receive the 1 PB software enhancements at no charge.
