Acronis Buys Data Loss Prevention Vendor DeviceLock

The deal positions Acronis to add protection from data leakage by employees, contractors, and other corporate “insiders” to its growing “cyber protection” portfolio, which includes integrated backup and security functionality.

Acronis has acquired DeviceLock, a maker of data loss prevention software.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. DeviceLock will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Acronis going forward. Its new owner plans to use the DeviceLock DLP solution, which is designed to prevent malicious and accidental data leakage by employees, contractors, and other corporate “insiders,” to augment the capabilities of its Acronis Cyber Platform, an integrated combination of security and backup technologies introduced last October.

“By adding DeviceLock’s solutions to our portfolio of cyber protection products and services, we’re giving our partners and customers an easy way to deliver an unprecedented level of functionality among endpoint DLP solutions in an affordable price range,” said Acronis Founder and Executive Officer Serguei Beloussov in a media statement.

Currently used on some 4 million computers in more than 5,000 organizations globally, DeviceLock’s software offers data loss protection for Windows and Mac laptops, desktop computers, and virtualized Windows sessions and applications. Joining forces with Acronis will help the company get its software out to more users more quickly, according to Ashot Oganesyan, DeviceLock’s CTO and founder.

“By merging with Acronis, we can accelerate product innovation, expand our distribution channel, and leverage our existing technology to meet customer requirements,” said Oganesyan in prepared remarks. “With the knowledge gained from nearly a quarter century of experience providing device control and endpoint data leak prevention solutions, we are certain that this acquisition will protect millions more users and ensure secure and reliable data protection deployments worldwide.”

The Acronis Cyber Platform is the underlying foundation for two other major offerings released last fall. Acronis Cyber Protect, which officially entered general availability in May, is an edge and endpoint security system equipped with backup, disaster recovery, anti-malware, anti-ransomware, web filtering, and data authenticity validation functionality. It runs on Acronis Cyber Infrastructure, a purpose-built, software-defined hyperconverged infrastructure solution for storing backups and running recovery environments.

All three systems are part of a strategic effort by Acronis, which is long known for its backup software, to redefine itself as a provider of comprehensive data protection solutions.

Acronis acquired 5nine, a cloud management and security vendor, last December. Acquisitions will continue to play a role in the company’s efforts to expand its portfolio in the future.

“We are looking at both developing new solutions internally, as well as acquiring additional leading vendors to add even more capabilities to our existing repertoire,” Beloussov in his press statement. “The world of IT security is always changing, and we are determined to continue evolving our solutions to meet the ever-changing needs of the market.”
